The campaign started on Tuesday and already went viral.

On May 13 in presence of a local MP Selim Osman  Hindu headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta of a school in Narayanganj for allegedly making ‘offensive comments’ about religion was forced to sit-ups holding the ear in public.

Principal Shyamal Kanti Bhakta of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in the district’s Bandar area said “The locals were provoked by the false accusations of him making disparaging statements about religion.”

Shyamal was beaten up by a mob. He was then rescued by police and taken into safe custody, Abul Kalam, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station said.

Narayanganj MP Selim Osman admitted that the punishment of doing sit-ups holding the ear in public was meted out in his presence.

Shyamal admitted that he had indeed beaten up a student and locals used this incident against him. He denied the claim that he had used abusive language against religion.

He claimed that people in the school management with grievances towards him had used the incident to take revenge.

A three-member committee was formed to investigate the incident where the principal of a Narayanganj school was insulted in presence of a lawmaker.

Terming the incident “unacceptable”, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said he is deeply embarrassed on Monday.

“It is very sad and inhumane, we are very shocked,” the minister said reporters at his office in Dhaka.
